Continuous design control for machine learning in certified medical systems

2022

AbstractContinuous software engineering has become commonplace in numerous fields. However, in regulating intensive sectors, where additional concerns need to be taken into account, it is often considered difficult to apply continuous development approaches, such as devops. In this paper, we present an approach for using pull requests as design controls, and apply this approach to machine learning in certified medical systems leveraging model cards, a novel technique developed to add explainability to machine learning systems, as a regulatory audit trail. The approach is demonstrated with an industrial system that we have used previously to show how medical systems can be developed in a con…

The Internet of Things for Applications in Wearable Technology

2022

The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) era has propelled the development of wearable technology. Wearable devices are widely used in medical, healthcare, sports, and safety applications, bringing more convenience to the living environment. Wearable devices can be worn on the body, collect body data using sensors, and process the collected data to obtain valuable information. IoT enables devices to connect and exchange and transmit data. Wearable devices in IoT can collect data for analysis and automatically adjust wearable device functions by connecting the obtained information to other devices. In this paper, we collect and organize articles on wearable devices used in IoT from 2017 to…

Efficient contour-based annotation by iterative deep learning for organ segmentation from volumetric medical images

2022

Abstract Purpose Training deep neural networks usually require a large number of human-annotated data. For organ segmentation from volumetric medical images, human annotation is tedious and inefficient. To save human labour and to accelerate the training process, the strategy of annotation by iterative deep learning recently becomes popular in the research community. However, due to the lack of domain knowledge or efficient human-interaction tools, the current AID methods still suffer from long training time and high annotation burden. Methods We develop a contour-based annotation by iterative deep learning (AID) algorithm which uses boundary representation instead of voxel labels to incorp…

Life-saving technologies that are not used to save lives

2021

A hundred years ago in July, thanks to the advancement of medical technology, the first human received the vaccine Bacille Calmette-Guérin—or BCG—to prevent tuberculosis (TB), a disease that killed at least 20% of the European population during the 19th century. Since then, hundreds of millions of lives have been saved by BCG, as well as other vaccinations for dangerous diseases. However, although TB is quite preventable and curable, it remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent in the world. It is an example of how humans can invent technologies to improve and save lives but fail to do so because of unevenly distributed resources, lack of media coverage, and other ec…

Medical Software Needs Calm Compliance

2022

The promise of calm computing, a concept introduced by Mark Weiser more than 20 years ago, has been mostly realized today. For instance, as an end user, you expect to interact during your daily routine with a multitude of sophisticated services and applications without being aware of their technical implementation. All you need is a smartphone and an always-on Internet connection. peerReviewed
